Sleeping bags can be divided into several major groups, namely blanket models (the classic straight models) and mummy models (with a hood and narrower towards the feet). There are two types of fillings on the market: sleeping bags filled with a synthetic filling and those with a down filling. Down has the advantage of providing exceptionally good insulation. Its insulation value is much higher than that of many synthetic fibres. In addition, down can be compressed into a smaller size in your compression sack. However, you must make sure that your down sleeping bag does not get wet. Synthetic fibres transport moisture much more easily and therefore quickly ensure that your sleeping bag becomes dry and lightweight again.
